HI all,

I just bought a 1972 Series III diesel in Italy, and now I want to rebuild the diesel that it came with. I have some questions, and would love to hear from someone who has rebuilt the Land Rover engines before (this is my first engine rebuild).

Please email me directly with hints, tips, and stuff I should buy to have on hand before I start.

For this project, I want to maximize performance from my 2.25 l diesel.

1) How do I know if my engine is 3 or 5 bearing?

2) Should I go for 9:1 compression? Where do I buy the new short set of push rods for the rocker arms if I go with 9:1 (I live in Germany currently)?

3) I plan on going with a time chain gear conversion to all gears (Zeus kit), has anyone done this?

4) I plan on trying a new performance camshaft from Automotive Component Remanufacturing Limited, has anyone done this?

5) To increase horsepower, I want to remove my fan and use an electric, is Kenlowe the best for this?

6) What other things am I missing that will increase performance?

Thanks,

Derek dpom@usa.net

Hi Derek,
you can tell if its a 3 or 5 bearing crank by removing the sump, then look to see @ how many
places the crank is attached to the block, ie:
if it is attached @ either end of the crank and also one in the middle thats a 3.
if it is a 3 then my advise to you is keep it standard as a 3 b crank wont stand up to been beefed up. whilst your having a look wich one it is its a good time to inspect your big ends and mains, also check your crank for any obvious signs of abuse.
as regards to timming chain conversions.
i dont see it is that nessersary with a chain type, i have done one but it was to replace a cam belt type, the gear type to me just eliminate the chance of having a cam betl snap.
the Kenlowe is a good idea well worth the money it does put some horses to bed and also comes in handy if you plan on doing any wading. if i can be of any more assistance send me a mail-Good Luck!!
